Sample the jazz atmosphere

Atmospheric photographs of the London jazz scene in the Fifties are to go on show at the National Portrait Gallery.

Recently acquired by the gallery, the collection of works by Walter Hanlon features luminaries such as Johnny Dankworth, Humphrey Lyttelton, Cab Calloway, Wally Fawkes, Annie Ross and Joe Harriott.

One image shows Hanlon giving tips to Calloway - famous for song Minnie The Moocher - while another shows musician and broadcaster Lyttelton in silhouette. Many pictures were taken in the London Jazz Club in Oxford Street (now The 100 Club).

Hanlon, 81, said: "The Fifties were a stimulating time."

Jazz In London: Photographs by Walter Hanlon, from 21 January to 20 July. Admission free.
