Tussauds' Charles is brought up to date

Prince Charles has been in the public eye since he was born and a likeness of him has been on display at Madame Tussauds for almost as long.

As these pictures show, the heir to the throne's waxwork has been updated a few times over the years, with varying degrees of success.

The latest incarnation was unveiled today after a £150,000 makeover that saw the Prince of Wales given a retreating and greying hairline, ruddy cheeks and "crow's feet" around the eyes.

The work was done following the addition of models of Princes William and Harry to the Royal Gallery last year. Visitors complained that their father looked too youthful standing next to his twentysomething offspring and insisted he should be made to look his 58 years.

Ben Lovett, the museum's PR manager, said: "The new Charles has more character to his face, which inevitably means more crinkling around the eyes, a bald patch and a lot more wrinkles.

"But while we had to discard his face and start again, the Prince can be consoled by the fact that we have recycled his body from the figure made in 1989.

"His face may have aged, but he still has a youthful physique."
