            German beer

german fun: beer and frauleins

WITH German Oktoberfest celebrations all over London this month, now is your excuse to don the lederhosen and dance on chairs with tankards of beer in hand at one of the many German-style beerhouses.

Previously a dingy ice-cream parlour, Stein's (Richmond Towpath, TW10, 020 8948 8189, www.stein-s.com) is a Bavarian-style beer garden on the Thames. You must buy food to drink alcohol but the bratwurst are worth it for a taste of the Erdinger Weissbier (£6.20/two-pint stein).

Further east is the Bavarian Beerhouse (190 City Road, EC1, 0844 330 2005), which is running its sixth annual London Oktoberfest. It offers a Paulaner Munich lager to rowdy crowds for £7.80/stein.

Zeitgeist at The Jolly Gardener in Vauxhall (49-51 Black Prince Road, SE11, 020 7840 0426, www.zeitgeist-london.com) is London's first German gastropub. A 36-long German beer list, stocked with everything you'd expect plus a few rare beers, available by the pint for under £3.

The Octoberfest Pub (678-680 Fulham Road, SW6, 020 7736 5293, www.octoberfestpub.com) has an authentic Munich beerhall feel as standing up and singing to the German oompah brass band is actively encouraged and its Paulaner beer (£6.50/stein) is imported from the brand's Munich headquarters.

The Utobeer stall in Borough Market (SE1, 020 7378 9461) stocks bottles of special Oktoberfest beer. Most popular are Augustiner and Lowenbrau, both around £3

I've been to the bavarian beerhouse last weekend and it was soooo much fun. The band was really good and even played happy birthday for one of my friends.
The whole atmosphere was really good - which you wouldn't really expect in a cellar.
The beer is a bit overpriced but totally worth it - i loooooove Paulaner!!!
We didn't eat anything, but we saw some massive sausage platters on the table next to us and they looked absolutely amazing.
Their Oktoberfest ends this weekend so I would really recommend to go there before it is too late. Really fun night to remember!
