A popular pub with friendly regulars
9 Jul 2007
As long as we've known it - and it's been a long time - this place has been a great pub. The Richard I is everything a good local should be. Of course, it does excellent Young's beer, the service is polite, friendly and prompt and the food comes recommended.
As it is a popular place, seats inside can often be hard to come by, but on warmer days, the large beer garden draws the punters outside, consequently leaving a little more space within (though the place is never empty) should you need to rest your feet.
The regulars come in all shapes and sizes and are a friendly lot. It's just up the hill enough to deter all but the most determined of Greenwich tourists, but when they get there, they'll find their efforts are rewarded. There are plenty of pubs in this little area of Greenwich, but this one's still amongst the pick of them for us.

We used to go there a lot for the above reasons, but we are not welcomed now that we have a child. It might be dog friendly but is certainly not child friendly. This attitude is well-known amongst Greenwich residents. Even quiet well-behaved children are not welcome in the pub. We went there about a year ago with some friends and our 7 year-old daughter and they were very happy to sell us a round of beers. However, we were then told that we could not stay indoors but had to sit in the beer garden, even though it was pouring with rain, because we were with a child. We shall never go there again - we have found better places to go.

The Richard I is always a popular choice with our crowd. Good service, fab food and really nice garden for catching rays (when the sun makes an appearance). Nice place to lose an hour or 3. It's also good to find a local that still feels like one instead of being pretentious or wine bar-like.
