Mood is black for regulars at Goth pub

Devonshire Arms
Devonshire Arms: on of the last bastions of Gothdom

4 Sep 2007

You don't come here for the drink, you come here for the mood, because this is one of earth's last bastions of Gothdom. If you're into that sort of thing, you'll certainly be happy here.

They take their music seriously here, but it encompasses a pretty wide spectrum, considering; you might hear anything from early OMD, Goth stalwarts Bauhaus or some Norwegian Death Metal.

All of this suits the regulars - of which there are many - as well as the Goth tourists who come here to sit nervously eyeing everyone.

A bunch of older locals also drink here during the day, which can add a quaint touch of banality to the doom-laden atmosphere, but their presence has been diminishing over the years.

One for alternative types, there's a door policy in the evening to prevent 'the blue jeans and trainer brigade' diluting the atmosphere, which is, incidentally, pretty relaxed and friendly.

Wearing black is the easiest way to gain entry, but also expect a few extravagant types - we've seen plenty of velvet, lace and Victoriana, as well as someone in full equestrian attire - breeches an' all.

Overall, anywhere you get a pentagram drawn on the head of your Guinness is OK by us.

It's dirty, the overpriced drinks selection is poor and using the flooded, stinking toilets while you are there is murder! The unpleasant door staff also leave a lot to be desired. Imo there really isn't much point going to the Dev when there are so many other rock bars in Camden that play good music and have a much more friendly atmosphere.

As a semi retired Goth, this place is to be recommended.I still use it actually, when visiting Camden to buy my clothes (as no other retalier stocks what I wear). Get in early to avoid waiting too long at the bar and enjoy the decor which is best viewed when quieter. Can get horrendously busy as the night falls, but then you'd expect that. They deserve the popularity and I hope it's still there in years to come!
Definitely deserves a visit, if only for the music!

Going there again Saturday fortnight actually!

I really wish I could make the trip out there. What fun it would be! Maybe add a vampire to the mix.
