Owners reverse decline at Island Queen
2 Jan 2008
Once again, after a long period in the wilderness, the Island Queen is a pub we at Fancyapint? can heartily recommend. The owners of this fabulous old place have taken the time, care and patience to reverse the decline of recent years and make it a pub to be proud of.
The beer line-up is excellent: Pride, Landlord and Deuchars on the hand pumps, with Kolsch, Fruli, Leffe, Hoegaarden, Staropramen and de Konninck all on draft.
The wine list is pretty decent and the food is worth visiting for - we especially like the fish and chip Friday thing (although can we have proper chips, not "hand cut wedges", please?).
The pool table has gone, to be replaced with much needed extra seating, which is lucky as the pub's popularity is fast making it tricky to find a seat at the usual times.
The much-loved papier-mache political caricatures of old may be long gone, but the spirit of the old Island Queen is back with us again, Cheers!

Once again inconsiderate landlords, music too loud, lights down so that you can't read the menu and for whose benefit clearly the bar-staff. If they can be bothered, try the the Narrow boat might be better.

Your opening address seems to suggest that the Island Queen is once again on the up .Far from it . It is only going through a brief period of revised interest . Why ; the management is , under the facade of friendlyness , just turning it into another dross hole clone of Upper Street "throw pints of larger down your neck" to music loud enough to stop you speaking to others , or have a read of the paper. The management is also rude to customers . Not a patch on a good pub experience , and the sooner the current "regime" goes ,(as they will),the better!
