Perfect pub for a summer drink
13 May 2008
A modern Young's pub on the south side of the river very close to Blackfriars bridge, it offers the usual Young's range of drinks and pretty decent food.
Its location is what makes this place popular (and in summer it is very popular). It has a large terrace with seats and tables by the river, there are no major roads nearby (the heavy traffic on Blackfriars bridge is shielded by the closer railway bridge) and there's a nice view of the dome of St. Paul's rising above the squalid mass of buildings on the north bank, that is the Mermaid Theatre complex.
The opening of Tate Modern has increased the clientele substantially, especially with the Millennium Bridge connecting across to the City, so sometimes service can be a little slow.
The addition of a proper coffee bar in the corner suggests they know who their main clientele is and where they're coming from. It's still less crowded, has much better beer and is better value for money than the Tate cafe...
CLIENTELE: office workers, tourists, locals
NEAREST STATION: Blackfriars station
FEATURES: disabled facilities, ATM, real ales, outdoor seating, children welcome/baby changing facilities

Watch your bag if you go there as I have had my bag stolen and I know two other people who had wallets and bags stolen so be aware as really professional thieves operate in this area and particularly target this pub. Otherwise, standard pub grub, busy bar with staff who seem incapable of serving more than one person at a time but handy for the globe and the river walk.
