Duke of Sussex
Stunning decor: Duke of Sussex still has some of its traditional fixtures

10 Jun 2008

When the Duke of Sussex revamped itself in the latter half of 2007 from a yoof orientated and rather raucous place, it signalled the almost complete blanketing of Chiswick in upmarket gastropubs. Of course, like anything else, no two are identical - even if they are aiming for roughly the same demographic - and often what can differentiate them is what remains of the old boozer they replaced.

In the case of the Sussex, this was clearly once a grand Victorian pub and happily some of this grandeur still remains - ornate bar, acid etched glass and high ceilings are the order of the day. The rear dining room, which was probably the billiard room, benefits from quite stunning triple height ceilings and intricate decoration. After many years languishing, it appears to have been sympathetically restored and for that we must be grateful.

The menu has British and Spanish influences, but we weren't in the mood to fork out the mid teen prices to sample it. Drinks wise, there's a good wine list (served in carafes, if that's your predilection) and three ales on, well kept. It's proving popular and was pleasantly busy on our visit - ultimately a good pub for the residents of South Acton.
