The Guinea Grill

Description: This Guinea used to be frequented by servants and stable hands who worked on the Berkeley Estate in the 1720s. Nowadays, the regular customers are mainly office workers who give it a friendly atmosphere. The Guinea Grill

Guinea doesn't need fixing

Guinea Grill
Mixed offerings: Guinea Grill combines food and drink

5 Aug 2008

Although the term 'Pub & Dining Room' has recently been commandeered by reworked gastropubs, the time-honoured connotations of the term are fully evoked by this place.

Located just off Berkeley Square on Bruton Place - on a site where a pub has stood since the fifteenth century - you'll find the Guinea Grill serving up award winning pies (the steak and kidney was particularly spectacular, if a bit on the posh side, on our last visit) and other traditional fare and the separate Guinea Bar playing host to the local office staff. And it's good to see that Wells and Young's haven't decided to change a thing about this slice of pub history - after all, if it ain't broke don't fix it, and this definitely isn't broken.

Due to the titchy size of the bar this one can get tremendously busy during the week. However, on Saturday nights the bar is often deserted, so if you're after a quiet night out in secluded surroundings, this could be the one for you.

CLIENTELE: besuited gents, tourists
NEAREST STATION: Bond Street station
