Description: A vast Victorian pile in Balham that made Evening Standard pub of the year a few years ago. You can use it as a regular, traditional pub (there are half a dozen ales on tap) with fairly substantial food, but the building incorporates numerous venues-within-a-venue (including "Shakespeare's Globe", which is a two-tier theatre, and a ballroom) which play host to dance nights, comedy clubs, sports screenings and so on.

Young, vibrant and lively: The Bedford

06.10.08

The Bedford

If you want full-on entertainment, noise and activity look no further: The Bedford

Look here too

The Bedford is big. In another world it could be an army barracks.

A huge slab of a building containing a ballroom, a theatre, umpteen function rooms various bars - of course - stairs, half landings and various mysterious doors.

A bar tender could probably work downstairs and never meet the upstairs employees.

And this is so much more than just a place to drink in - although the choice isn't bad with up to half a dozen real ales promised and food is available.

There was a play on in the theatre the night we were in and regular comedy and cabaret nights are on offer, too.

Young, vibrant and lively is, for once, an accurate description - and although we are not quite sure why, it seems to be summed up by the bicycles double and triple banked and chained to the railings outside.

Not a place for the quiet contemplative pint and a relaxed chat but if you want full-on entertainment, noise and activity look no further.

NEAREST STATION: Balham station
FEATURES: Real ale - regular guest beers, dog friendly, function room available, live music, cabaret and comedy, separate theatre, Sky TV (big screen)
