The Two Chairmen

Two Chairmen is no longer a secret

Two Chairmen
First name terms: the Two Chairmen has its regulars

11 Nov 2008

Hidden away in a secluded and exclusive area close to St. James's Park, for many years the Two Chairmen remained the classic "hidden gem".

Inevitably it was finally being "discovered", by local civil servants, tourists and conference attendees. It does, however, still manage to retain some of the old local feel - quite a few of the clientele are regulars and know the barmen (and vice versa) and the interior is a cosy, old-fashioned, wood-panelled affair perfectly in keeping with the area. For beer-lovers, there's a good selection of well-kept beer on the hand pumps and the rest of the drinks menu is what you'd expect for an upmarket area such as this.

Obviously early evenings and lunch times can see the place pretty crowded, so get here later or ealrier if you want a seat. There is an upstairs room with a bar (which can be hired), but the bar itself is frequently not open, so you'll often have to negotiate the narrow stairs with your precious pints if it's your round.

Like the City, it's rather quiet in these parts at the weekend, so unfortunately the pub isn't open then. But should you find yourself midweek, mid-afternoon in the area, you'll find the Two Chairmen a welcome detour.

I came across this little boozer purely by accident and liked what I found. That was a couple of years back now and I'm well overdue another visit.
Worth popping in,if you like the old pub feel, but don't go during lunchtime!
