Gordon's Wine Bar

Description: London's oldest wine bar -- in wonderfully gloomy candlelit cellars near Embankment tube -- is accessed via an anonymous doorway, down a set of rickety stairs. It offers a good range of wines (plus sherries, ports and Madeiras, but nothing else) at tolerable prices, plus rather expensive hot dishes and plates of cheese. In summer, arrive early to bag one of the prized tables on one of the nicest terraces in the centre of town.

A Dickensian retreat: Gordon's Wine Bar

Gordon's Wine Bar
A charming little watering hole

5 Jan 2009

Not a pub, we know, but a wine bar with more charm and atmosphere than many of London's boozers(particularly those nearby); Gordon's is one of the most idiosyncratic drinking holes in town, its darkened alcoves a world away from your average pub interior.

Yellowing newspapers from yesteryear adorn the walls, and candles plugged into dusty wine bottles provide the illumination. If Miss Haversham was in the licensing trade, this could have been the result.

As for the choice of drinks, a wide range of both old and new world wines are available, though port or sherry (decanted from barrels above the bar) often feels the most appropriate tipple.

Given the proximity to Trafalgar Square, it's no wonder the place is sometimes standing room only and sometimes not even that- hence only a three pint rating. So it's worth visiting at a quieter hour at the weekend to get a bit more space. Either that or get off work early and nab a table. Though take care entering from the side entrance - one false step and you'll be head first into the salad bar.
