The New Rose

It's hard to believe that almost every pub along Essex Road was once a rough local's boozer and the New Rose is no exception, having received a makeover a few years ago.

The outside is something of a delight, with original green tiling and hanging baskets complimented by tables sporting chequered tablecloths.

Inside, the moody interior features lots of exposed brick, candles and uplighters, but they kept the old gantried bar - the look is warm and inviting, rather than industrial.

The toilet signs however, titled George and Mildred are probably a joke lost on anyone under 30.

On the drinks front, there is an above range of lagers and usually three ales to choose from; our last visit found a well kept selection from smaller breweries, which was good to see.

DJs make themselves know towards the latter part of the week, but the volume is such that conversation is still possible.

Essex Road has its fair share of bars and pubs, but the New Rose seems to have struck the right balance between authenticity and pretension.

Indeed, their modest self description of being "just another pub" somewhat sells them short.

FOOD REVIEW:

Simple, effective and not too expensive. Good pizza and sandwiches. No chips however - they serve portions of roast potatoes instead.
