Well, this one has been gastrofied, but it's not been a bad thing - quite the contrary.

It's got a magnificent collection of pewter tankards, a fairly small zinc bar, a lovely rail clock on the wall over the connecting door to the back bar and dining area and green banquettes in the front room with blue enamelled number plates over some of the seats - giving an impression of a train station waiting room at the very least.

It was a bit quiet for a Wednesday lunchtime, and the fact that tables in the back were set for lunch didn't help much either.

The regulars and local workers who did appear seemed comfortable, which is really what you want for a local pub.

The menu doesn't throw up any real surprises in the gastro era, although some of the mains are a bit pricey - £10 for a burger! There's three ales on the taps, promise of a good wine list and the almost de rigueur handmade scotch eggs.

NEAREST STATION: East Putney station
FEATURES: real ale, guest beers, traditional pub games, open after 11pm, outdoor seating, quiz night Sunday, separate restaurant, TV

Details are correct at the time of publication - please check with venue before booking.
