The Cat's Back gets away with junk shop look
16 Dec 2009
Pubs that go for that 'junk shop' look often appear a tad knowing, but the Cat's Back makes it look effortless and as a result seems to get away with it.
Sure, you're surrounded by more random objects here than in the BBC Props Department, but there's a pleasant feel to the place, helped by a smattering of original features and a couple of nooks. Our last review noted it was a relatively quiet and laid-back place, but that construction of new flats nearby might change all that.
Well, that was a while ago and things have certainly changed. Its still laid-back, but on our Friday night visit it seemed like a small slice of Soho had been relocated to a Wandsworth back street, with crowds spilling onto the pavement and standing room only inside.
Nevertheless, the service managed to be friendly under the strain and the small bar menu was very tempting. There are more flats going up at the moment (its getting claustrophobic now) so we'll visit again to see how it copes with the next wave of new locals.
It's also one of a number we've seen adopting a 'members club' to give regulars some kind of loyalty bonus. As if we'd need one?

Lovely pub - love the look and feel (staff are really friendly!) really unique, there aren't many like this London. Plus food is really good! Look forward to the live music coming back this saturday. That's my weekend sorted!
