London,

The Seven Stars

Description: A glorious Elizabethan pub behind the Royal Courts of Justice, serving a good range of ales to a mainly legal crowd. It's very small, with one side devoted to food (delivered by a dumb waiter) so it can get extremely cramped. The walls are decorated with drawings of judges and movie posters of past crime films (which usually seem to have starred Richard Attenborough or Terry Thomas).

The Seven Stars
The Seven Stars: avoid lunch times and early evenings

13 Jan 2010

The Seven Stars is an ancient, tiny little pub that's a great place for a pint when it's not packed - to do this you need to avoid lunch times and early evenings.

It's a charming and olde worlde pub and would be just the thing for the tourists if it wasn't already packed with people from the surrounding law courts.

The excellent selection of well-kept ale on the hand pumps, largely from the Dark Star Sussex brewery when we were in last, decent pub grub and friendly service make this one well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Watch out for the precipitous stairs to the toilets (especially when you've had a few) and for the resident pub cat Tom Paine - once seen sporting a white ruff.

Oh, and it's also one of the few pubs in the square mile that you'll find open seven days a week.

NEAREST STATION: Temple station

Details are correct at the time of publication - please check with venue before booking.

Hard to believe Temple station is any nearer then Holborn and Chancery Lane (equidistant?). But a delightful pub!
