The launch of the eighth series was watched by eight million viewers, matching last year's opening.
This year is the first time the launch show has taken place on a Wednesday.
Of those watching TV at the time, a peak of 35 per cent watched Big Brother compared to 37 per cent for the first night of last year's series, eventually won by Tourette's syndrome sufferer Pete Bennett.
Last night's reality show beat The Apprentice on BBC1 (4.8 million) and the British Soap Awards on ITV1 between 9pm and 10pm (5.7 per cent compared to 5.8 per cent between 9pm and 10pm for Big Brother).
Angela Jain, Channel 4 commissioning editor for Big Brother and head of E4, said of the figures: "This heralds a fantastic start to Big Brother.
"We remain as committed as ever to making this year's series the most entertaining yet."
