Wu-tang Clan

Putting the record straight

'Dammit', I like your trainers, man,' says the Wu-Tang Clan's head honcho RZA, a man known to his mother as Robert Diggs.

Fergus Henderson, the man who cuts to the chase, eliminates all nonsense and just serves the best ingredients, straight up, as they should be. Simple space, simple idea, but no one else seems able to do it. Is FH the Mies van der Rohe of British cooking? St John Bread & Wine, 94-96 Commercial Street, E1 (020-7247 8724).

  • At Bu San the food is good. Lots of Korean fish and veggie dishes. Try the bibimpap - rice, meat and veg served in a hot, stone bowl. The free barley tea is the perfect accompaniment. Bu San, 43 Holloway Road, N7 (020-7607 8264).

Maida Vale's lovely Lebanese

The Lebanese people amaze me - they can open a decent restaurant anywhere in the world. Like the Italians and the Chinese, but with an extra mile of globe-trotting madness. Every country I have ever been to in Africa has had a decent Lebanese restaurant, and many more besides. You'll find good schawarma in the Democratic Republic Of Congo, Gabon, Benin, Sierra Leone, the Ivory Coast.

More Asian-mix

Fancy some Asian grub? Here are some more good Asian mix eats to be found around town.

More fish restaurants

Fish is tasty and healthy - if you want to taste the best in town try one of these restaurants as recommended by Kate Spicer.

Good, local food

My little sister has a thing about toffs after an altercation with an Oakley-wearing teenager in a car park in Cornwall last summer. So I was cautious about taking her to the Ifield which sits on the borders of Chelsea and Fulham.

A lively taste of the Lebanon

Heavenly or hellish dining

(This review was published in August 2002)The ma?tre d' at MVH is patronising, bossy and somewhat snooty. Three traits I normally find infuriating, but in a place like this it comes across as endearingly camp. The decor is somewhat hysterical - to attempt to describe it in detail would waste precious word space.
