A new Post for Journal ex-chief

The Washington Post has named former Wall Street Journal managing editor Marcus Brauchli as its new executive editor in the latest corporate shake-up in the US newspaper industry.

Brauchli resigned from the Journal earlier this year when new owner rupert Murdoch replaced him with former Times editor robert Thomson.

"It's both a privilege and possibly the most intimidating thing I've ever done to think about coming into an institution with such deep and proud traditions as the Post," Brauchli said.

He takes over the job on 8 September. The appointment is a departure from tradition for the Post, which has in the past favoured insiders who came up through its editorial ranks.

Brauchli takes over at a difficult time for the paper. Circulation, as with most other US newspapers, is falling along with advertising revenue. The paper reported an 11% decline in quarterly ad revenue last May. More than 100 newsroom staff recently accepted pay-offs, leaving about 700 newsroom employees at the paper.
