Air passenger numbers take off for BAA's airports

Heathrow-owner BAA today reported its first rise in domestic passengers in two years for last month, as Britons return to pre-recession routines.

The number of people flying between British destinations grew 1.1% to 1.35 million. BAA also said its six British airports had a 2.4% rise in passengers — to 7.13 million — last month compared with 2009. Heathrow passenger numbers rose 5.3%.

The figures were slightly inflated as most of BAA's airports struggled with the heavy snow in February last year, but even stripping out the effect of the weather there was a 2.7% rise in passengers at Heathrow.

Returning confidence was also represented in the greater long haul traffic, which was up 4%. The number of passengers flying to China last month was 6.8% higher, the Middle East up 11.1% and South America up 17.6%.

Cargo volumes were up 23.2% — a third consecutive month of double-digit increases reflecting the economy's return to health.

Colin Matthews, chief executive of BAA, said: "Heathrow remains resilient and other airports are beginning to see encouraging signs. However traffic remains depressed, reflecting tough conditions in the economy generally and in aviation specifically."
