Apple lawyer's deal on options

The former top lawyer at iPodmaker Apple has agreed to pay $2.2million (£1.2million) to settle charges involving backdating of stock options for senior executives including founder Steve Jobs.

Under the deal announced by the Securities and Exchange Commission, former Apple general counsel nancy Heinen, who had faced a civil trial, is also banned from serving as a director or executive officer of any public company for five years.

She neither admitted nor denied wrongdoing.

Federal regulators said Heinen had altered company records to conceal backdating of options. Hundreds of companies have been investigated over the practice of altering the date of options awards to take advantage of share-price rises.

The criminal probe at Apple ended in July after more than a year.

Apple acknowledged Jobs was aware of backdating but said he did not benefit financially or understand the accounting implications.
