Atkins can't lose under Darling's plan

If Chancellor Alistair Darling manages to spend his way out of recession, Britain's leading design and consulting engineer WS Atkins says it will find itself in the middle of a bonanza.

Atkins is already doing well out of Labour. Today it revealed a leap in profits and the creation of 1000 jobs in the last six months, half in the UK in nuclear and utilities work, schools building and the defence industry, and half in the Middle East construction boom.

"If the Government fulfils its economic plans we will find ourselves in a very robust market," said Atkins chief executive Keith Clarke. "But even if they fail we have found that in times of downturn there tends to be more consulting and planning work, getting better value for money, which also plays to us."

Atkins reported pre-tax profits in the six months to the end of September of £47.5 million, up 11%. The interim dividend is boosted 17% to 8.75p
