Atkins cuts jobs as spending dives

Olympics engineer WS Atkins today admitted it was cutting jobs in the UK after a fall in Government spending hit its highways business.

It said the UK market remained "challenging" but it was benefiting from investment by water companies and the rail industry. It expects to employ 17,700 people by the end of this year, down from the current level, according to the engineer's website, of 18,000.
