Aviva looks to raise £1.1bn with big insurance sell-off

Aviva will raise around 1.2 billion (£1.1 billion) from selling off a 42% stake in its Dutch insurance business Delta Lloyd, it revealed today.

The share sale, the largest in western Europe this year, kicked off with investment banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley leading the bookbuilding over the next fortnight. Dealings in the shares, which will be priced between 15.50 and 19, will start on 5 November.

Aviva said the sell-off would enable it to look at restructuring its balance sheet and "further growth opportunities".

Depending at which end of the indicated share price range the offer goes, Delta Lloyd will have a total market value of 2.6 billion to 3.1 billion.

That is a substantial discount to the Europeanwide accountancy valuation of Delta Lloyd's underlying business, which was today stated at 4.1 billion.

Aviva will keep a 57% stake in the business but will have only 53% of its voting rights.
