BAA handles fewest flyers for six years

The number of people travelling by plane is in freefall.

Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports owner BAA today said it handled 9.8 million passengers in November - a six-year low. That is a year-on-year slump of 8.9% and the worst-ever monthly drop.

It is also the first time since 2003 that BAA has handled fewer than 10 million passengers in an autumn month. Passenger numbers slumped 13.5% at Gatwick, 13.2% at Stansted and 4.8% at Heathrow, which has prided itself on being the world's busiest international airport.

Holiday charter traffic collapsed by 17% while UK domestic traffic was down 12.7%.
