BAE shells out £538m for counter-terror operator

BAE Systems has cemented a deal to buy counter-terrorism operator Detica for 440p a share, valuing the company at £538 million.

Detica provides the authorities with software used for information management and earns more than half of its revenue from government contracts.

The company had earnings of about £27 million in the past year with revenues of £203 million.

"The company has achieved compound annual growth of 39% and 25% in revenues and diluted adjusted earningsper share, respectively, over the past five years," BAE said.

It aims to use Detica's expertise in the US where it "will provide a platform" for the homeland security market.

Ian King, chief operating officer of BAE who takes over as chief executive in September, had identified the business. He said one of the areas the company was looking at "quite intensively is this merging of defence and security".
