Banks' news clash causes chaos in City

City banking analysts were thrown into chaos today after Lloyds unexpectedly put out its first-quarter trading statement at the same time as Barclays.

Lloyds was not expected to report for another week.

Barclays was forced to postpone a conference call with the City to accommodate its rival.

"People have known we were reporting for some time and the banks have always been fairly good at avoiding clashes," said Barclays finance director Chris Lucas.

Analysts criticised Lloyds, saying they were already under enough pressure with Royal Bank of Scotland reporting tomorrow and HSBC on Monday.
