Bay Trading collapse threatens 1000 jobs

A thousand jobs are at risk after cheap fashion chain Bay Trading became the latest victim of the credit crunch cull, today collapsing into administration.

The brand, which has 265 stores and concessions including branches in Wimbledon, Hammersmith and Walthamstow, was a victim of a restructuring by owner Alexon, which also runs retailer Ann Harvey and womenswear store Kaliko.

Alexon brought in administrators Deloitte after describing "material uncertainty" about the future of the clothing brand at the group's preliminary results on Wednesday.

That led to the loss-making Bay Trading having its credit insurance withdrawn. Its stores remain open as the administrators look for a buyer.
