Britons back ‘staycations’ by letting Haven homes

Britons with a bit of spare cash are betting on the "staycation" becoming a regular summer fixture and splashing out on affordable holiday homes.

Seaside caravan parks operator Haven Holidays is claiming unprecedented demand from investors to buy-and-leaseback holiday homes on their 34 campsites around the UK.

Haven, part of the Butlins and adult-only Warner Hotels group Bourne Leisure, said sales of its static caravans at its Cornish and Welsh sites have doubled and that the level of demand is a result of Britons in the grip of recession giving up on foreign holidays because of either the cost or the hassle.

Haven says investors are typically buying the homes for around £18,000 to £19,000 and then leasing them back for use by the holiday park. Top of the range Haven homes are priced at as much as £80,000.

Latest official statistics reveal the number of Britons going abroad is at a seven-year low. The number of holidaymakers arriving in Spain last month was down 6% year-on-year.

Analysts, however, wonder how long-lived the "staycation" will be after another summer of poor weather.
