Bank's China bond call

One of London's most senior bankers is calling on the government to issue a renminbi-denominated bond as part of a charm offensive to boost the capital's chances of becoming a key trading post for China's currency.

Peter Sands, the chief executive of Asia-focused bank Standard Chartered, wants London to step up efforts to become the world's second offshore trading centre for renminbi after Hong Kong as China liberalises its currency with a view to rivalling the dollar as a global reserve.

George Osborne struck a deal with Hong Kong last month to forge closer links and extend yuan trading hours during Europe's working day. "We think it would be helpful if the government also signalled that it was interested in issuing a renminbi bond," Sands said. "There are symbolic steps that help focus attention on the market and also to get it started."

So-called "dim sum" bonds have been issued by companies such as BP looking to tap Chinese investors. Last month, a Chinese wealth fund acquired 9% of Thames Water, demonstrating the east's interest in sinking cash into Europe.
