Finance directors from the worlds of luxury goods, media and energy will battle it out this spring to be crowned the FTSE 100 FD of the Year.
Stacey Cartwright of fashion house Burberry, BSkyB's Andrew Griffith and Angus Cockburn of Aggreko, the temporary power supplier, have all been shortlisted for the top prize at the FDs' Excellence Awards. They will compete in the same category as Next's David Keens, Robert Dyrbus of Imperial Tobacco and Andrew Shilston, who has just retired from aero-engine maker Rolls-Royce.
The awards, designed to recognise the best-performing finance chiefs in the country, are in association with accounting body the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and supported by the London Evening Standard.
The hunt for the leading executive with a tight rein on the balance sheets of everything from blue-chip multinational companies to small, privately held businesses was created by Real Business and is also backed by employers' group the Confederation of British Industry.
Last year's FTSE 100 winner was Richard Pennycook, the chief financial officer of supermarkets group Morrisons.
Other categories honour the best finance director in the FTSE 250 as well as picking the Small Quoted FD of the Year.
In addition, nominations are still open until March 2 for the Young FD of the Year, Private Company FD of the Year and FD of the Future awards.
Research carried out in tandem with shortlisting found 43% of finance directors say their influence has grown over the past year.
In such turbulent economic times, it is perhaps no surprise that 58% report that their board now spends more time talking about finance.
The FDs' Excellence Awards ceremony takes place on May 24.
