Britain today strengthened its commitment to nuclear energy after signing a deal with France which paves the way for the construction of a new generation of power plants in the UK.
David Cameron claimed today's agreements were "just the beginning" of investment to create a number of commercial deals in the nuclear energy field, worth more than £500 million and creating 1500 UK jobs.
He said the UK's commitment to nuclear energy was "part of a diversified energy mix".
Rolls-Royce said it expected to win a £400 million share in the building of the first of the planned power plants, alongside French nuclear giant Areva.
At the UK-France summit Cameron and French president Nicolas Sarkozy agreed a shared commitment to civil nuclear power, establishing a framework for co-operation on security, research and development, education and training.
Downing Street said that by joining forces in the nuclear sector, Britain and France could develop a competitive supply chain capable of seizing opportunities around the world. The two governments plan to work with the International Atomic Energy Agency "to strengthen international capability to react to nuclear emergencies and establish a joint framework for cooperation and exchanging good practice on civil nuclear security".
Today's announcement comes almost a year after a tsunami in Japan wrecked the nearby Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, leaking radioactive material.
Last June, ministers announced plans for the next generation of UK nuclear plants, confirming eight sites suitable for new power stations by 2025.
