Vodafone's customers shun eurozone travel

Mobile giant Vodafone's UK business customers are cutting back on travel overseas as part of a wider trend seen across Europe.

Chief executive Vittorio Colao said British revenues from roaming - when users go abroad - fell by around 14-15% in the last quarter to December 31.

Lower volumes of overseas phone usage was responsible for around a third of the slide in roaming revenues as people travel less, particularly in the worst-hit eurozone countries such as Italy.

But Colao said falling prices contributed to two-thirds of the decline.

UK revenues rose 1.1% to £1.27 billion in the period as smartphone and data use rises, while global turnover rose 0.9% to £10.61 billion.

Vodafone's India business, VIL, was the stand-out performer with 20% growth.

Analysts reckon that Vodafone could soon consider an initial public offering of VIL in which it holds a majority stake.

Finance director Andy Halford said "we haven't got a particular timeline" about a stock market float and wants clarity on regulation from Indian authorities.

In a sign of how Vodafone is monitoring the eurozone crisis, Halford said Vodafone conducts a sweep of cash from its European businesses at the end of each day and brings it back to the UK.
