Cadbury: The rise of a socially aware business

That is best symbolised by Bourneville, the purpose-built village for Cadbury workers on the outskirts of Birmingham — a 120-acre site that was started in 1893.
John Cadbury opened his first shop in Bull Street, Birmingham in 1824 selling tea, coffee and drinking chocolate. As a strict Quaker he didn't drink alcohol and wanted to provide the people of Britain's second city with wholesome alternative drinks.
As Quakers were non-conformists they were barred from going to university and so entering the professions. They were also pacifists which ruled out military careers. That led many into trade with the Cadbury family, whose rivals in the confectionary business were Frys in Bristol, and Terry's and Rowntree's in York.
Top brand Dairy Milk was launched in 1905 and Milk Tray in 1915. Cadbury merged with JS Fry in 1919 and with Schweppes in 1969. The soft drinks arm of the business was demerged as Dr Pepper Snapple last year.
