Call to scrap 'unfit' pubs trade group

The trade body that represents the large pub companies should be disbanded, a leading MP said today.

Greg Mulholland, chair of the Save the Pub group and a long-standing critic of the sector, says the British Beer & Pub Association is no longer fit for purpose.

He said: "It is a tragedy for the British beer industry that the once-respected Brewers' Society, now the BBPA, has lost its credibility by making the mistake of focusing so much of its attention on defending the discredited over-rentalisation model of pub ownership, one that has done so much damage to the British pub that of course British brewers rely on."

Pubs have been closing at the rate of five a day as consumers stay at home and beer prices keep rising.

Greene King recently left the BBPA.

Mulholland added: "The BBPA is now seento be simply the mouthpiece of a few giant pubcos."

There was no answer today from the offices of the BBPA.
