Capital’s businessmen doubt Darling’s ideas to beat slump

Most London's businesses leaders say the Government does not have the right ideas to get Britain out of recession and is failing to get grips with the country's finances.

A poll for the Evening Standard by ComRes in the aftermath of the Pre-Budget Report (PBR) delivers a withering verdict on Chancellor Alistair Darling's plans.

It also showed that 73% of those surveyed did not believe Darling's claim that Britain will emerge from recession during the fourth quarter of 2010.

Only 19% backed his forecast that growth will have restarted by the end of the year.

Just 11% agreed the PBR showed the Government "has the right ideas for getting Britain out of recession" while 78% disagreed and 11% did not offer a view.

The same proportion, just 11%, believed the PBR demonstrated the Government is "getting to grips with the black hole in the country's finances", while 75% disagreed and 14% did not know.
