CBI: sales on the High Street are healthy

Retail sales jumped in November while shopkeepers are expecting demand to hold steady at Christmas.

In figures which support the more historic official data's account of a healthy high street, the CBI's survey today showed sales were rising.

The figures from the business lobbying organisation confounded economists' predictions that the figures would be weak.

Ian McCafferty, CBI chief economic adviser, said: "High Street sales growth held up well in November and retailers are hopeful that the run-up to Christmas will be just as strong."

McCafferty warned, however, that retail sales growth could "lose some of its sparkle" as consumers rein in their spending after Christmas when a rise in VAT kicks in.
