City experts predict slump will run into next year

The economic downturn will continue well into the first half of next year, according to a survey of merger and acquisition (M&A) professionals published today.

The findings suggest that the heady days of manic M&A activity are still a long way off, after 52% of corporate experts surveyed by mergermarket and IntraLinks said they do not expect the economy to pick up for at least a year.

The research stamped on more green shoots when 73% of respondents said they expect a spike in the number of corporate restructurings. More than 80% believe the UK will experience the most restructurings in Europe during the next 12 months.

In the first half of this year the UK's M&A market was down 66% compared to 2008. Just 257 deals were recorded with a total value of £21.1 billion.

Andrew Pearson, European managing director for IntraLinks, put a positive spin on the findings and said they suggested M&A bargains would abound.

"The savviest investors will be those who are able to make key decisions quickly and execute efficiently," Pearson said.
