Clinton is ready to go online in cards battle

High Street greeting cards seller Clinton Cards today revealed plans to take on successful online cards retailer Moonpig.com by launching its own customised cards website.

Chief executive Clinton Lewin revealed the expansion plan as the retailer posted an annual pre-tax profit of £24.1 million, up from £22 million in 2008.

Moonpig has become an internet success story, raking in sales of £20.9 million last year. Lewin today said although Clinton's would continue to expand its 800-store estate on the High Street, it plans to "take on new technology too."

He said: "Clinton will launch personalised cards online within the next financial year.

"We're also going into mobile marketing, with an iPhone application.

"In 10 years' time we'll still be on the High Street, but we'll be big online too."

The retailer said its Birthdays business, which it put into administration in May before buying back 180 of the chain's 322 shops, "expected to be profitable in the current year."

Lewin added that the store was gearing up for Christmas, when it makes about a third of its turnover. He said: "Trading this year was satisfactory but we hope next will be better. We're looking forward to a busy Christmas."
