Collins Stewart said revenues for the first four months of the year were 12% up at £63.6 million.

Wealth management and corporate finance division Hawkpoint both had a strong start to 2010.

Equity broking had tougher time with lower than average volumes, while corporate broking saw a number of deals put off because of the election.

Rival Evolution simply said "total income and operating profitability" were ahead of the same period in 2009 "despite some extremely challenging market conditions".

Chief executive Alex Snow said: "The recent financial market turbulence is a reminder of how short-term uncertainties stemming from the ongoing unwinding of the global structural imbalances may continue to provide challenging trading conditions for some time.

"The group is confident, however, that its growth plans remain on track."
