Construction firms suffer in work famine

Britain's construction companies sank deeper into the mire last month as housebuilding and office development work dried up.

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply today said that its barometer of activity for the sector — where 50 is the dividing line between growth and contraction — dropped from 40.5 in August to 38.8 in September.

Market economist Gemma Wallace, co-author of the report, said: "There can be little doubt that the UK construction economy is now mired in a recession, and one that is likely to prove difficult to recover from."

The CIPS report follows yesterday's news of a sharp and worrying decline in activity in manufacturing.

The collapse of such key planks of the economy has piled pressure on the Bank of England's monetary policy committee to cut interest rates when it meets next week.
