Construction rally lift as more staff are hired

The recovery in the construction sector gathered pace last month as building firms started hiring more staff.

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply today said its index of activity, where above 50 represents growth, hit 58.5 in May.

That was up from 58.2 in April and the strongest reading since September 2007. Employee numbers rose for the first time for two years as firms resumed hiring.

CIPS chief executive David Noble said: "On the surface things are looking positive with recent growth accelerating and more jobs on the horizon.

"However, the recovery is so fragile that it will be extremely vulnerable."
