Costain eyeing Government's 'Crossrail billions'

The boss of construction giant Costain today said work on the start of the Crossrail tunnel at Paddington was going to plan, as it prepares to bid for the project's major contracts.

Chief executive Andrew Wyllie said big deals were still going ahead after Costain's revenue rose above £1 billion for the first time in 16 years in 2009. Operating profit increased 14% to £20.8 million.

He said: "There will be some spending cuts after the election but the Government will still spend billions, and if we can get a share of that we'll be happy.

"We're focusing on the energy and environmental sectors where work will still be going ahead."

Costain is building the Belvedere waste energy plant on the Thames, which will convert rubbish into energy for 21,000 London homes.
