Diners keeping their taste for Carluccio's

The restaurant industry is struggling, but Carluccio's says the public hasn't lost the taste for its authentic Italian fare.

Sales in the Christmas period - the 17 weeks to 25 January - were up 14 per cent.

The company reckons it benefits from being both a restaurant and a retailer - customers can linger over a meal or take away a coffee.

The solid progress means that Carluccio's boss Simon Kossoff feels able to push ahead with an expansion programme at a time when rivals may be tempering their ambitions.

He plans to open five new outlets this year to add to the 41 already trading.

"Trading was satisfactory, although the pressure on the consumer was evident with a much more cautious spending pattern in the run-up to Christmas than in prior years," said Kossoff.

The shares have had a rough ride, falling from 230p in the summer of 2007.

Today, they were sitting at 59p, which values the business at £34million.
