One site launched last month, Boffer.co.uk, sells just one product every 24 hours but gets 20,000 hits a day. Yesterday it was offering powerful computers for at £39.99 a time, with a product description comparing the virtues of its hard-drive memory with those of an elephant that never forgets.

The site's quirkiness has led some to describe it as an online Trotter's Trading Company, after its Del-boy-style sales patter. Site investor Shaf Rasul, who is behind optical media company E-net Computers, called it a "concept that has captured the imagination of the internet community through its diverse product range and targeted viral marketing strategy."

Other sites are also getting in on the act.

Dorset-based company wholesaleclearance.co.uk is selling job lots of liquidated Hallowe'en-themed goods. Yesterday it was offering 64 ghost-themed candles for £30.
