Fuller Smith & Turner warns of another tough year for pubs

It looks like being another tough year for pubs in all but the most salubrious areas.

That's the message from Fuller, Smith & Turner, the group that brews London Pride and runs many of the best boozers in the capital.

Although reporting today that sales in the 10 weeks to January 22 were up 3.7%, Fullers warned that the near future will be tougher for the trade and customers alike.

"Looking further ahead to 2011/12, cost inflation is becoming an issue and we are concerned that in these uncertain times our customers may have less discretionary spend," it said.

Fullers sold four pubs during the first half, leaving its estate at 360 locals.
