G4S locks up £416m despite recession

The huge number of properties that need to be guarded after being boarded up because of the recession is helping lock away big profits and dividend rises at security giant G4S.

The Anglo-Nordic Group 4 Securicor combine today delivered underlying pre-tax profits for 2008 up 22% to £416 million.

The profits growth was underpinned by last year's acquisition of the GSL secure institutions group and ArmorGroup, the formerly quoted mercenary recruiter, and a growing number of contracts in developing markets, especially Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Qatar.

In the UK, G4S is growing its business with vacant property protection services and a new lone worker alarm system used typically by health professionals visiting in the community.

G4S is also using ex-Gurkha soldiers on protection duties in the UK and for training British military personnel headed for Iraq and Afghanistan.

The group's new UK contracts include securing the facilities under development for the Olympics.

The total dividend is boosted by 30% to 6.43p.
