Galliford Try takes over landmark restoration

The restoration of the Gothic masterpiece fronting St Pancras rail station should be arriving by the end of next year — three years late.

Manhattan Loft Corporation has been working on Sir George Gilbert Scott's listed Victorian landmark to build 67 apartments, a £10 million penthouse and a 244-bedroom five-star hotel for Marriott Renaissance.

Today it said Galliford Try would be the latest construction firm to try to restore the building to its former glory. Once the 600-room Midland Grand Hotel but subsequently known as St Pancras Chambers, it has been designated one of English Heritage's top 10 most important buildings.

The job to renovate, restore and convert its ornate interiors was awarded to Laing O'Rourke. When Laing went on site in 2006, the plan was to get the job done in time for the 2007 opening of Eurostar's new St Pancras International station. But Laing walked off the job, then valued at £80 million, after a bust-up.

Manhattan Loft Corporation today said it has appointed Galliford Try to pick up the contract, now worth £103 million. Galliford is pledging to complete the project by the end of 2010. The apartments were pre-sold as long ago as 2005 at an average price of £800,000 each.

"It is a prestigious landmark which has such great historical significance and is currently one of London's most high-profile restoration projects," said Galliford chief executive Greg Fitzgerald.
