Game stays cautious despite festive fillip

Consumers may have stopped splashing out on doing up their homes, but they are clearly still staying in, glued to games consoles.
Video games retailer Game Group today said it has enjoyed a happy Christmas, with like-for-like sales up 5.4% in the six weeks to January 10 across the group. In the UK and Ireland, sales rose 10%.
Profits for the year to the end of January are now expected to be slightly ahead of market forecasts at over £122 million.
"We're very pleased with our performance, particularly in the UK. We've had a host of titles including Call of Duty: World at War which have performed really strongly, and all consoles have sold very well," chief executive Lisa Morgan said.
But Game said it remains cautious about trading during the rest of 2009.
Flooring specialist Topps Tiles continued its string of gloomy updates, saying sales had sunk 13.3% for the first 13 weeks of its financial year, with like-for-like revenues down 18.1%. Cast-iron cooker maker Aga Rangemaster also admitted it is still feeling the heat, although trading has not deteriorated further since a profits warning in October.
