Glass ceiling opens for 3i finance chief

09 September 2008
Private-equity giant 3i, led by chairman Baroness Hogg, said that Julia Wilson, 41, is to take over as group finance director from November.
The appointment of Wilson comes just days after the annual Sex and Power report raised fears the amount of women landing senior jobs in the UK has stalled.
That report, from the Equality and Human Rights Commission, found that in nearly half of all senior job categories there are now fewer women.
The report said that far from smashing through the so-called glass ceiling, women are coming up against a "reinforced concrete barrier".
Women make up a fraction of the total number of FTSE 100 directors — just 123 according to latest figures — though that is up 40% since the turn of the decade.
Wilson is replacing Simon Ball, 48, who is leaving 3i for "new challenges" just four years after joining the company.
Formerly corporate finance director at Cable & Wireless, Wilson was recruited by 3i two years ago as Ball's deputy.
